A 21st century community learning center program

The Pathways to Success Program (P2S) at Big Mama’s Children’s Center is a collaboration between Big Mama’s Children’s Center and Hurley and Associates, LLC. The program is funded by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education’s (OSSE – DC) 21 st Century Community Learning Centers program and is designed to provide students in grades Kindergarten through 6th grade attending Big Mama’s Children’s Center fall after school program with a structured, developmentally appropriate enrichment program during after school hours to support their growth and aligns to students’ school-day academic program.

 

The fall program is designed to meet the needs and interests of school-age students; providing opportunities to strengthen their socialization skills, get assistance with homework, and further develop language and literacy skills, math remediation and enhancement, promote curiosity and interest about the world of STEM through exposure and use of technology resources and materials in an environment that is fun, safe, and supervised.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES

 

Gardening: Students will learn about nutrition and wellness. Students will also have an opportunity to learn principles of gardening and growing vegetables from seed. Culminating activity includes creating their own personal plants and vegetables to take home continuing to challenge what they have learned

 

STEM Exploration: Program designed to support students’ understanding of planning and conceptual design of engineering, aid students in learning how to use the processes and approaches of scientific inquiry, and use technology in meaningful ways. Grounded in project-based learning, students will not only learn scientific concepts but will also develop scientific habits of mind (observation, computation, communication, and evaluation).
